The Power of Rest: Why Restorative Yoga Matters

Restorative Yoga

We live in a world that often celebrates doing.

Being productive. Keeping busy. Fitting everything in. Pushing through when we’re tired.

And yet, rest is just as important to our wellbeing as movement and activity.

This is one of the reasons I love restorative yoga. It offers something that can be surprisingly difficult to find in everyday life: permission to stop.

Restorative yoga and the nervous system

Our nervous system is constantly responding to what’s happening around us. When we’re busy, stressed or under pressure, our bodies can spend a lot of time in a more alert, activated state.

We need this response — it helps us deal with challenges and respond when we need to. But we also need opportunities to come back down from it.

Restorative yoga creates space for this shift.

Rather than working towards a deeper stretch or physically challenging the body, restorative yoga uses comfortable, supported postures, props, gentle breathing and stillness. There is very little to do.

And that is the point.

As the body becomes more supported and we slow our breathing, we can create the conditions for the nervous system to settle. You may notice your breathing becoming softer, your muscles releasing and your thoughts gradually becoming quieter.

Rest is not being lazy

I think this is something many of us need reminding of.

Rest can sometimes feel unproductive. We might feel guilty for sitting still, taking time for ourselves or doing nothing when there are always things that could be done.

But rest isn't something we need to earn.

Our bodies are constantly working for us, and recovery is a natural and necessary part of that process. Giving ourselves time to slow down can support physical recovery, mental wellbeing and our ability to cope with the demands of everyday life.

Sometimes the most nourishing thing we can do is simply stop asking so much of ourselves.

Creating space to come back to yourself

Restorative yoga also offers something beyond the physical.

When we slow down, we have an opportunity to notice how we actually feel — perhaps something we don't always have time to do when we're rushing from one thing to another.

There can be a sense of coming back into ourselves.

No striving. No comparison. No expectation to perform.

Just breathing, resting and allowing the body to be supported.

This is particularly important during seasons of life when we spend a lot of our energy caring for other people. Sometimes we need somewhere we can simply be, without having to achieve anything or look after anyone else.

A gentle reminder this autumn

As the days become shorter and the natural world begins to slow down, autumn feels like a beautiful reminder that there is a rhythm to life.

There are times for activity and times for stillness. Times for growth and times for rest.

My new Cosy Yoga workshop at The Salutation Inn has given me the opportunity to explore this quieter side of yoga, but restorative yoga is something we can bring into our lives in many small ways.

Perhaps it's lying down for five quiet minutes.

Taking a few slower breaths.

Going to bed a little earlier.

Putting your phone away and sitting with a cup of tea.

Or simply reminding yourself that you don't always have to be doing something.

Rest isn't a luxury. It's part of being human.
